Accessible Voting in the 2025 Irish Presidential Election
As Ireland prepares for the Presidential election on Friday, 24 October 2025, it’s vital that every eligible voter, including those living with Parkinson’s, can exercise their right to vote with ease, dignity, and independence. The Electoral Commission has outlined several accessible voting options to support people with disabilities, illnesses, or mobility challenges.
Available Alternative Voting Options
1. Postal Voting – People with a disability or illness can apply for a postal vote. This allows you to vote from home without needing to attend a polling station. To apply, you must complete the PV2 Application Form, which is available in accessible formats. The deadline for applications for the Presidential election was Monday, 29 September 2025, but this option remains important for future elections.
2. Special Voters List – If you live in a hospital, nursing home, or similar facility, you may be eligible to vote from there via the Special Voters List. This ensures that your vote is counted even if you cannot travel to a polling station.
3. Changing your Polling Station – If your assigned polling station is not accessible, you can request to vote at an alternative location. This must be done at least one week before polling day. You’ll need to contact your Returning Officer in writing and, if possible, suggest a more suitable polling station.
Assistance at the Polling Station
If you choose to vote in person, there are several supports available to assist you:
- Companion Assistance: You may bring someone with you to help mark your ballot. This person must be over 16, not a candidate or agent, and may only assist up to two voters per election.
- Presiding Officer Assistance: A polling station official can help you vote privately. Note: this assistance may be limited during the final two hours of polling to ensure others can vote without delay.
- Ballot Paper Template: For those with visual impairments, a tactile ballot paper template with braille and raised print is available at every polling station.
Tips to Keep in Mind:
- Plan Ahead: Consider your mobility and energy levels on polling day. If you anticipate difficulty, explore postal voting or changing your polling station.
- Bring ID: Valid identification is required. Options include a passport, driving licence, or Public Services Card.
- Vote Early: If you need assistance, arriving earlier in the day can help ensure staff have time to support you.
