Parkinson's Ireland calls for targeted funding for counselling, nursing, and neurology services to ensure equitable and timely care.

Parkinson’s Ireland Launches New Scholarship for Parkinson’s Nurse Specialists
Parkinson’s Ireland is delighted to announce a new scholarship initiative to support registered nurses in becoming Parkinson’s Nurse Specialists through specialist training at Swansea University.
Parkinson’s Disease is the fastest-growing neurological condition worldwide, with numbers in Ireland expected to rise to 18,000 by 2025. Best practice recommends one Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist per 300 patients – meaning Ireland needs 60 specialists but currently has just 19.
To help address this shortfall, Parkinson’s Ireland will fund course fees for successful candidates who complete one of Swansea University’s specialist Parkinson’s modules. These courses provide nurses with the skills and knowledge to support people living with Parkinson’s and their families throughout their journey.
Speaking about the programme, Shane O’Brien, CEO of Parkinson’s Ireland, said:
“We are delighted to launch this scholarship to raise awareness of the career and to ensure there are more qualified nurse specialists in Ireland. Parkinson’s Nurse Specialists play a crucial role in the care of people with Parkinson’s Disease.”
