Parkinson's Awareness Week: 26 - 30 April

1st Awareness Week for Parkinson's

Every major charity in Ireland has opted to run awareness weeks for their chosen organisation. This year, for the first time, the Parkinson’s Association of Ireland is utilising this method to gain awareness of Parkinson’s. Awareness weeks help to raise funds and also awareness among the general public and health professionals. For many people stating they have Parkinson’s can be difficult, however through awareness campaigns the stigma can be removed. This week is the culmination of the pre election campaign that many of you joined in during February. The response from political parties of all colours, was fantastic. We now need to drive the message home through an effective campaign throughout the country.

On the 19th of April, Olympic Gold Medallist, Michael Carruth and Eurovision Winner, Shay Healy will help us launch our awareness week. Some Branches have opted for coffee mornings and seminars and others are engaging with local radio stations to get the message out to the general public and yet more are holding flag days in their towns and cities. Part of the drive from the week long activities is to focus the minds of the public and public representatives onto Parkinson’s.

Getting our voice heard is not easy. We need your help to make the events a huge success and to help us build towards an even bigger and better week next year. Please join your local Branch’s activities and ask your family and friends to join in too. Together our organisation can grow stronger and we can ensure that care for people with Parkinson’s is given the resources that it deserves. Send us in pictures and stories about the events you attended and engage with your local radio stations and newspapers. Together we can make a difference.
