David Walsh - A Man Apart

My name is David Walsh, I'm 44 and I was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. When the symptoms came on as such, I was in the Gym and working out. I managed to damage my shoulder and from there on it seemed to get progressively worse.

I eventually went to my GP, tried to sort it out that way, didn't really have much success there and eventually ended up going to see a neurologist as a result of taking a fall. Within less than 10 minutes they diagnosed me.

I've gotten allot worse in the last six or seven months. I'm trying to turn that around in the sense of thinking positively, seeing all the right people. When I get nervous, I start kinda slurring words, shaking, tremoring. It's directly linked to your central nervous system. I'm here to talk about it from the point of view of trying to raise money and awareness for Neurological issues and not just for Parkinson's. Please look through this site for further information on events we are organising to help raise money and awareness for these issues.

Robbed But Undaunted

When thieves smashed in the windows of David Walsh’s jeep and stole his bike in Dublin city centre, they stole a lot more than they thought. David who recently cycled across America from San Diego to New York City, to raise fund for the Parkinson’s Association, needs the bike to enable him to exercise and maintain his flexibility and balance. David called the RTE radio show, Liveline to see if anyone could assist him in recovering the bike.

Fortunately Gary Rooney of Gary’s Cycles in Sligo, knew only too well what David was talking about as his father also had Parkinson’s prior to his death. Gary contacted Damien O'Reilly who was hosting Liveline and offered David a brand new bike!

Our picture (left) with thanks to Raymond Cullen and the Evening Herald, shows David in the Carmichael Centre on Monday the 15th of August with Gary Rooney and the delight on David’s face says it all. Well done to Gary and his family for their generosity and we look forward to more of David’s fantastic exploits over the coming years.
